The White House is currently in damage control mode following the June 27 presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
According to Svetlana Ekimenko of Sputnik News, the executive branch is insisting that the 81-year-old Biden has “absolutely” no intention of dropping out the presidential race. The veteran Democrat seemed to be “clear-eyed” and committed to carrying on despite reports suggesting that he had conceded to an ally and is set to exit the race.
Biden and his allies have called all hands on deck to figure out a scheme to “rebuild confidence” in the incumbent’s mental acuity, but the move appears to be too late. According to a poll by the Wall Street Journal, 80 percent of the nation’s voters say Biden is simply too old to run for a second term. That was seven points higher than the previous survey conducted by the outlet in February, where 73 percent of voters said the same.
Biden and the 78-year-old Trump participated in a debate hosted by CNN in Atlanta. Biden appeared disoriented, confused and incoherent – reinforcing ongoing concerns about his cognitive decline. The two candidates are set to face off again in another debate on Sept. 10.
Following the debate, talks on when Biden might hit the exit ramp and bow out due to medical reasons exploded across all corners of the U.S. media landscape. Reports were also rampant that allies of Vice President Kamala Harris were privately discussing scenarios of her possible candidacy. (Related: Biden’s campaign claims his TERRIBLE performance during debate with Trump was a result of “overpreparation.”)
Ekimenko mentioned that during the last 48 hours following the debate, Biden scrambled to assure major party members that he is fine and he won’t step aside. He reportedly phoned several Democrats in Congress on July 2 and 3, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, Delaware Sen. Chris Coons and South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn.
Biden also met in private with more than 20 Democratic governors on the evening of July 3. During this meeting, the president told the state leaders that he underwent a medical checkup after the debate and is fine.
Among those Democratic lawmakers is Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who lamented how Biden failed to defend his “many accomplishments” and expose Trump’s alleged lies. In Doggett’s view, “Biden is not the best hope to save democracy in the U.S. – and thus should step down to prevent Trump from winning in November.”
“Unlike Trump, Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself,” said the congressman in a statement. “I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.”
Meanwhile, several Democratic governors held a private call to discuss concerns about Biden’s lack of communication with them. The call, organized by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for the Democratic Governors Association, also touched on Biden’s chances in the November election.
The governors expressed a strong desire for Biden to address them directly and noted discussions about a potential call with the Biden campaign or the White House, as well as the need to hear from Harris.
